MIMI STILLMAN is one of the most highly regarded flutists in the concert world today. A Yamaha Performing Artist, Ms. Stillman is internationally acclaimed for performances as soloist and chamber musician at major concert halls and festivals, including as soloist with The Philadelphia Orchestra, Hilton Head Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra of the Triangle, Bach Collegium Stuttgart, Orquesta Sinfónica Carlos Chávez (Mexico City), Oklahoma City Philharmonic, Philadelphia Classical Symphony, Texas Brazos Valley Symphony, Orchestra 2001, and Curtis Chamber Orchestra. She has performed recitals and chamber music at venues including The Kennedy Center, Carnegie Hall, the Kimmel Center, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, La Jolla Chamber Music Society, Verbier Festival, Town Hall, Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, and Bay Chamber Concerts.
At 12, Ms. Stillman was the youngest wind player ever admitted to the Curtis Institute of Music, where she studied with Julius Baker and Jeffrey Khaner and received her Bachelor of Music degree in 1999. That same year she became the youngest wind player ever to win Young Concert Artists.
A multi-faceted artist, Ms. Stillman has made outstanding contributions as educator, guest speaker, arts entrepreneur, and published author on music and history. She has taught masterclasses and performed recitals for the National Flute Association, New England Conservatory, Eastman School of Music, Flute Society of Washington, D.C., Texas Flute Society, University of California, and other universities and flute societies throughout the United States.
Mimi Stillman is the founder and Artistic Director of the Dolce Suono Chamber Music Concert Series, which since 2005 has been dazzling audiences and invigorating the music world through chamber music concerts in Philadelphia and throughout the region. Dolce Suono ensembles perform Baroque to contemporary music in innovative and engaging programs, and do educational outreach for school students. Dolce Suono’s active commissioning program has led to 14 world premieres in five seasons, with guest composers including George Crumb and Ned Rorem Ms. Stillman’s celebrated Dolce Suono Trio with longtime duo pianist Charles Abramovic and cellist Yumi Kendall grew out of the Dolce Suono series and is active on the concert stage.
A champion of new music, Ms. Stillman gave the world or local premieres of works by Martin Amlin, Mason Bates, Andrea Clearfield, Richard Danielpour, Daniel Dorff, Jeremy Gill, Jennifer Higdon, Katherine Hoover, Lawrence Ink, Daniel Kellogg, Lowell Liebermann, and Dianne Goolkasian Rahbee. She is regularly featured in the national press, as guest on NPR’s "Performance Today," WGBH Boston, WRTI Philadelphia, and WHYY TV Philadelphia, and is host and performer on the Musical Encounters TV show and video "The Magic Flute." She recorded the soundtrack for Kevin Bacon's film "Loverboy."
Mimi Stillman received an MA in history and is a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Pennsylvania. She has been awarded fellowships from the Earhart and Bradley Foundations. A published writer on music and history, she is a columnist for Flutewise Magazine (UK), and author of the award-winning book of arrangements of Debussy's songs, Nuits d'Étoiles: 8 Early Songs (Theodore Presser). She has recorded for the EMI, Albany, Dolce Suono, and DTR labels.
Ms. Stillman’s 2008-09 calendar includes solo performances with the Ocean City Pops, Orchestra 2001, Hoff-Barthelson Orchestra, recitals in New York at Yamaha’s YASI Hall, Bucks County Performing Arts Center, Glencairn Museum, Surflight Theatre, as guest artist for the Upper Midwest Flute Festival (MN), a return as flute clinician at Yamaha’s Music for All Festival in Indianapolis, and a recital and masterclass tour at Indiana State University, DePauw University, Ball State University, and Marian College. 2009-10 engagements include Philadelphia Chamber Music Society, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Bay Chamber Concerts, Ocean Grove Summer Stars Series, the National Flute Association in NYC, and the world premieres of commissioned works by Charles Abramovic and Benjamin C.S. Boyle on the Dolce Suono Chamber Music Concert Series.
